400 houses inundated in Tilathi
Around 400 homes got flooded and a man went missing when the rain-swollen Khado river breached its embankment in Rajbiraj, Saptari, on Thursday.
Domi Yadav, 50, is feared dead when a sand mound collapsed and threw him into the flooded river while attempting to repair the breach in the embankment at Deuri Bharuwa, police said.
While locals blame the security personnel present on site for not doing enough to rescue Yadav, police say they could not save him as the river currents were too swift.
The flooded Khado river caused a massive deluge 8km downstream from Deuri Bharuwa, flooding around 400 homes in the settlements of Malaha and Belhi of Tilathi.
Dev Narayan Yadav, a local man, said floodwaters as high as three feet swamped their homes.
This was the second flooding incident the people in Tilathi had witnessed in a period of one month.
More than 400 families were displaced in the flooding of July first week. The Tilathi locals have accused the authorities of lackadaisical response to solve the perennial problem of flood.
Flood sweeps away border pillars
Recent flood in the Babai river have swept away five subsidiary pillars along Nepal-India border at Gulariya Municipality-10, Bardiya.
Locals said the government has not taken any steps to restore the pillars so far. Officials from the District Administration Office had inspected the flood-hit border area on Wednesday.
